In 19th-century Lisbon, as the city grew around its trades and industries, vilas operárias emerged as close-knit residential communities for working families. Some were home to workers in tobacco factories, textile mills or ceramic and tile workshops; others grew around the fishing trade.

Established in 1878, Villa Dorothéa began as a traditional fishermen’s hamlet, where more than twenty families shared a way of life shaped by the Tagus and the sea.

While fishermen went out to sea, their wives - the varinas - sold fish, helping sustain their families and the local fishing economy. In the narrow alleyways, children played together, friendships flourished and generations grew up side by side.

Today, the spirit of that community remains woven into the fabric of Villa Dorothéa: a little village within the city, with its soul intact.
